Audio coding
From EBU Wiki - Audio Over IP
Audio coding means the audio digital encoding algorithm, the methods for transforming the analogic audio signal into a digital format.
Compared to voice over IP systems, N/ACIP group rely on wideband audio coding systems. Most of them are standardised but some manufacturers have also proprietary solutions that can be licensed.
Examples of standardised audio coding systems: PCM, G.711 (telephony), G.722, PCM, MPEG Layer II, MPEG Layer III, MPEG AAC, etc
